Surprising Help for Everyday Challenges

Neurodevelopmental challenges may not show up the ways you expect.

Did you know:

  • Children with difficulty reading may have gaps in vertical or horizontal tracking, leading to problems like skipping words or entire lines, or reading lines out of order.
  • Social difficulties can be related to gaps in auditory processing, showing up as social immaturity, poor listening skills, or “playing young.”
  • Stuttering, aggressive behavior, and memory retention, unrelated as they seem, can all relate to a brain’s confusion about its dominant hemisphere, a topic we can explore during an evaluation.
  • Kids with dysregulated sensory systems may not be able to stand haircuts, wearing hats or glasses, or having their hair brushed. They might be picky eaters, or eat things they shouldn’t. They might not know when they are too hot or too cold. Their sensory system might even contribute to seemingly unrelated struggles with fine motor skills or gross motor coordination.
  • Children with language delays may have gaps in auditory skills, oral motor skills, or their sensory system, contributing to poor articulation, poor conversational skills, or lack of verbal speech or even communication at all.

Neurodevelopment isn’t just for severe developmental issues or special needs. It provides a lens from which to view all kinds of everyday challenges, from academic problems to stuttering and picky eating. The neurodevelopmental model helps us identify possible gaps in the brain and figure out what to try next.
